As you learned in our summer letter, we have added a new College Counselor to our team and she is very excited to meet all of you! Would you like to know a little bit about her? Ms. Glavin grew up in McLean and graduated from Wake Forest University. She earned a graduate degree from UVA and has worked in admissions at: Wake Forest, UVA, Colgate, and Georgetown University. As you would imagine, she knows the world of college admissions extremely well and we are very fortunate that she will be sharing all of her insider knowledge with us! Ms. Glavin will be in Ms. Carter's former office and Ms. Carter will be in my former office. If you get lost, just check with Mrs. Monahan and she will point you in the right direction.
I asked Ms. Glavin for some "fun facts" at the universities she has called home.
Colgate - The number 13 is very important at Colgate. Every Friday the 13th is "Colgate Day," Colgate's address is 13 Oak Drive, their zip code begins with the number "13," and the list goes on and on....
Wake Forest- One of the most fun traditions at Wake Forest is the Rolling of the Quad. After every big athletics victory or major event on campus, students take toilet paper from their dorms and decorate all of the trees in the Quad. We never saw a lot of snow in North Carolina but the Quad frequently looks like a winter wonderland!
University of Virginia- Charlottesville is a foodie city! Supposedly, Charlottesville has more restaurants per capita than any city in the US, besides San Francisco. There are lots of great places to eat on The Corner, which is a strip of restaurants and stores that is a favorite area for UVA students. Ask me for recommendations if you are heading down there to visit!
Georgetown- One of the most popular pranks is to try and steal the clock hands from Healy Tower. It has been a tradition since the 1960s and up until this past spring, the last time that the clock hands were stolen was 2005. In April, the clock hands were stolen again and the kidnappers sent a note to Georgetown saying that "the clock hands were en route to Vatican City to receive the blessing of Pope Benedict XVI." The school replaced the clock hands about a week later.
Ms. Glavin also has plenty of first hand experience about how the admissions process works at these schools, but we will let her tell you all about that in person.
The only thing we can't tell you about Ms. Glavin is whether she is on the Gold or White team. Stay tuned for the first school assembly and we will all find out together.
